On one hand, Gadiria is a modern or reinterpreted term inspired by the Phoenician name of present-day Cádiz — Gadir — used to refer more broadly to the area surrounding the ancient city. On the other hand, Gadiro (also referred to as Eumelus in the Greek translation by Plato) appears in the Critias dialogue as one of the ten sons of Poseidon, who ruled the Atlantic region near the Pillars of Hercules — a location often associated with Gadir.
